This two day class will cover techniques for creating designs on the surface of paper, as well as an engaging book structure in which to use and display a collection of these decorative papers.
We will first experiment with paste paint techniques, using various tools to create different
patterns and effects with pigmented starch paste. Two variations on the “flag book” binding will be taught using these papers. Originally developed by Hedi Kyle, the flag book is a unique structure that lends itself to incorporating multiple papers and allowing pattern and color to interact in dynamic ways. Students will also learn how to dye Tyvek and will use it for the accordion spine of their flag books. Tyvek is a durable polyethelene material that can be pigmented to create a decorative and versatile “paper”, useful in many bookbinding applications.
