We often think of an atlas as a heavy book filled with maps, but it can take another form. This workshop will cover two structures useful for maps or other material, inspired by examples the instructor came across in her work as a book conservator. One of these she refers to as the "Road Book" (based on a 1904 New England road atlas). The other (which she calls the "Map Poem Book") uses folding and board book construction and is based on a modern book of maps and poems but has historical roots. We will talk about the possibilities and limitations of fitting large paper into smaller books. In addition, we will explore methods of folding down paper to fit into bindings. Our models will be softcover, but easily adapted to hardcover versions, and useful reference for future work. While our focus will be on maps, these structures and methods apply to any larger paper items. Participants should have solid basic bookbinding skills to get the most out of the workshop.
Advance registration is required for all JCBA workshops. For more details or to register, please email JCBA Director John Cutrone (jcutrone@fau.edu). John will send you an email explaining how to pay your tuition online. It's a simple process.
