Haiku Accordion Miniature Book with Maria G. Pisano (Online)

Schedule: May 6, 2021 -- 2pm - 4pm (ET); 
1pm - 3pm (CT); 12pm - 2pm (MT); 11am - 1pm (PT); 

In this two hour class, students will join Maria Pisano in making a small accordion structure with haikus decorating each page. There will be a discussion on planning and designing a novel book structure, divers materials, and students artistic choices – to begin to understand the important connections between them, their interaction and support of its theme. Making a book is a gestation process. Once you have an idea, how do you begin? What is the process of creating mock-ups? How do you put your ideas into practice? By the end of the class, students will have created a miniature haiku accordion. Our natural surrounding, bugs, trees, flowers, animals, all speak of time, renewal, continuity and the healing power of nature. This book structure celebrates the resilience and diversity in nature and in all of us.

Instructor and bio:  Maria G. Pisano is a book artist, printmaker, curator and educator. Memory Press works are represented in The Library of Congress, 9-11 Memorial Museum, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Lafayette College, University of Delaware, Wesleyan University and many more. She has exhibited widely in solo – her most recents: titled Reflections: Artist Books and Works on Paper. Over the years she has curated a number exhibits, such as “Book as Witness: The Artist’s Response” at the Center for Book Arts in NYC and coming in 2021 Crossroads at the Hunterdon museum of Art. Ms. Pisano contributes to book arts publications and has presented lectures at the Library of Congress, College Book Arts Association and the Art Libraries Society of North America. Her article “Mark To Impress” was published in California Society of Printmakers 2018 Journal and 2019 in The Blue Notebook in the UK. She continuously gives workshops nationally and internationally, at her studio, libraries and institutions such as Bridwell Library, Dallas TX, Hand Bookbinders of California, and Center for Book Arts in NYC.
