NTRANS has the pleasure of welcoming you to a new season of our bi-weekly lunch box webinars. This spring semester the webinars will take place on Wednesdays at 12-13.00.
Presenter: Stefan Jaehnert
"Energy Security and Reservoir Management in Extraordinary Situations"
Hydropower is the backbone of the Norwegian power system. Uncertainty and variability in inflow and power production require stochastic optimisation methods to manage hydro reservoirs efficiently. However, the rapid and significant changes in the European energy system during the energy crisis posed challenges to the operation of the hydro system.
SINTEF Energy evaluated the handling of Norwegian reservoirs during 2021 and 2022 on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (OED). The study identified underlying reasons for the observed reservoir management.
The presentation will provide a short introduction to the concept of water values as a method for managing hydropower. It will present some highlights from the study conducted for OED, as well as some challenges in managing hydro in a future renewable European power system.
Bio: Stefan Jaehnert is a Research Manager at SINTEF Energi, leading a research group focused on power markets, hydropower operation, and stochastic optimization. He also leads Research Area 3 in FME NTRANS called "The Future Energy Market." He received his Dipl.-Ing in electrical and mechanical engineering from the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) in 2007. He holds a PhD in the field of power markets and power systems from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2012. He has been with SINTEF Energi since 2012 and has a main research interest in hydro-thermal power systems and the integration of renewable energy sources, with a special interest in the relationship between market design and system operation.
