The G 20 plays a defining role in shaping global economic policy across employment, energy, digital transformation, health, and international stability. These areas directly intersect with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The CRPD establishes binding obligations on accessibility, participation, non discrimination, and international cooperation. The SDGs provide a shared global framework for inclusive growth, resilience, and sustainable development. Yet, despite strong alignment, persons with disabilities remain insufficiently represented in global economic decision making, and disability considerations are often siloed rather than integrated across G 20 priorities.
Recent G 20 Presidencies (India 2022, Indonesia 2023, Brazil 2024, South Africa 2025) have taken important steps to elevate disability inclusion. Building on this momentum, the United States’ 2026 G 20 Presidency presents a critical opportunity to embed disability inclusion into three core priorities:
1. Removing regulatory burdens
2. Unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains
3. Pioneering innovations in AI and emerging technologies The Disability 20 (D 20) has emerged as a globally coordinated platform to strengthen participation, improve policy coherence, and align G 20 priorities with CRPD and SDG commitments.
The D 20’s long term vision includes securing formal recognition as an official G 20 engagement group and ensuring a smooth transition to the United Kingdom’s 2027 G 20 Presidency.
This side event will explore how structured engagement through the D 20 can accelerate implementation, strengthen accountability, and ensure that global economic policy advances the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
