This advanced level workshop will cover tortoise-shell stab-binding and hemp-leaf stab-binding. In learning these two intricate binding styles, participants will experience the rhythm of repetitive stitching patterns. Examples of artists' books (old and new) using related techniques will be shown, students will be led to discuss the relationship between a book’s binding style and its content.

Instructor and bio: Chang Yuchen is an artist and educator based in New York. She was an artist in residence at MASS MoCA (North Adams), Offshore (Sabah), MAD Museum (New York), Bananafish Books (Shanghai) and Textile Art Center (Brooklyn). She has shown/performed her works at UCCA Dune, Taikwun Contemporary, Abrons Art Center, Para Site, Salt Projects, Assembly Room and etc. Yuchen teaches through Center for Book Arts, Printed Matter, Asia Art Archive in America, CUE Art Foundation and more.
