Unique Structures: Record Book, Masu Progression, Plunder Book with Erin Sweeney (Online)

The Record Book is another fabulous Hedi Kyle creation: a very cool book that is created out of pockets. Each folio is folded, cut, and scored, and then stacked in such a way as to create a book that can house any number of cool items: ephemera, photos, recipes, poems, flotsam and jetsam. The Masu progression is a favorite of mine—a simple origami structure that can be a box with a lid to house objects, can be flattened and attached to other boxes for a sculptural book, or sewn together to make sections for a book or a constructed surface! And last but not least, the Plunder book challenges us to create a “book” out of provided materials, adding only adhesive, thread, or small structural items. A super fun challenge—and a good way to explore book structures and techniques with challenging materials.

Instructor and bio: Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She also has a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. Sweeney exhibits nationally, most recently at the Lyceum Gallery at the Derryfield School in Manchester, New Hampshire, Unrequited Leisure in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Thorne-Sagendorph Gallery at Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire. In July, Sweeney was awarded a Ruth and James Ewing Award for Excellence in the Arts.
