Limp Vellum Binding in the Style of Kelmscott Press (Los Angeles, CA)

T.J. Cobden-Sanderson designed limp vellum cases for both his own Doves Press and his friend William Morris’s Kelmscott Press. The basic structure was similar, but the two styles diverge in their (restrained) decorative elements. The Kelmscott were sewn on colored supports that laced into the case and extended beyond the yapp edges as decorative ties. The more austere Doves volumes were merely sewn with colored thread.

Students in this workshop will make a facsimile of the Kelmscott Press binding plus discuss historical precedents and features that can make limp vellum bindings open more freely.

Note: This is an intermediate-level workshop. Students should be familiar with folding, marking up and sewing.

Instructor and bio: Karen Hanmer’s artist-made books are physical manifestations of personal essays intertwining history, culture, politics, science and technology. She utilizes both traditional and contemporary book structures, and the work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer’s work is included in collections ranging from Tate Britain and the Library of Congress to Yale University and Graceland. She has served on the editorial board of The Bonefolder, as Exhibitions Chair for the Guild of Book Workers, and as frequent exhibition curator and juror. She offers workshops and private instruction focusing on a solid foundation in basic binding skills.
