In this backdrop, peacebuilding actors have been advocating for and investing in development-based approaches to addressing the root causes of violent extremism. In this panel discussion, UNDP, EU, and ICAN will showcase how the international, national and local stakeholders have been effectively collaborating to addresses violent extremism with a preventative and human security lens. This whole-of-society approach recognizes the role of local actors, including civil society and government actors, in identifying sources and causes of violent extremism as well as solutions that foster peace, resilience, equality, and pluralism, thus offering positive alternative pathways to those vulnerable to violent extremism. The speakers will share concrete examples of the impacts, challenges, and lessons learned, which highlight the value of youth and gender-responsive as well as inclusive and multi-sectoral approaches to preventing violent extremism.
