For our final session of Socialist Night School this semester, we’re looking back at some more recent history: democratic socialist uprisings in Europe and Latin America in the late 20th century.
People around the world looked with hope toward mass student protests and workers’ strikes in France in 1968 — and later the election of a democratic socialist, Salvador Allende, as president of Chile. These uprisings showed the power of mass struggle, especially mass working class struggle. But their eventual defeats — in Chile by means of a bloody military coup — raise questions about how democratic socialism will be achieved.
