Beginning with small abstract sketches, students will use these as tracings for working with wire fiber rush to design symbols that are forms of ‘visual communication’. Just like ancient petroglyphs drawn and painted on rocks which reflect the complex societies of past peoples, contemporary abstract encryptions in a 3-D structural form can embody messages and signs that have meaning. Using ideas from ancient petroglyphs, encrypted computer text and their imagination, students will wrap with fibers, collage with papers, and lash pieces together. Found objects can be added to develop thought provoking abstract notations and symbols. Lashing, knotless netting, and weaving can also be incorporated into each piece. Students will limit their color palette, and experiment with various other materials within their color scheme to help connect and unify their pieces. A sense of whimsy and playfulness will add to the enjoyment of working!
