The upcoming UN side event will focus on the implementation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Convention on Combating Extremism. This convention, adopted by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Russia in 2017, is the first international legal instrument dedicated to cooperation among participating states in combating extremism.
The event aims to provide a platform to exchange experiences and best practices in combating extremism. It will consist of two panel discussions with experts and practitioners from the SCO countries, focusing on regional experiences, challenges, and successes in implementing the convention. The discussions will address topics such as effective practices, legislative measures, initiatives against extremist ideologies, and potential areas for future cooperation.
The event's primary objective is to promote the implementation of the convention and encourage cooperation and coordination among Member States. By facilitating dialogue and sharing knowledge, the event aims to contribute to the global effort to address extremism, promote peace, security, and stability within the SCO region and beyond. The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and virtual participation.
