Territories of Life: Bioregioning in South Asia
Administrative divisions and national borders - often imposed from outside - are inattentive to local ecologies, languages and cultures. But interest and respect for alternatives is growing in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and China. Bioregions are being mapped in ways that combine different knowledge systems There are campaigns for the rights of rivers, watersheds and nature. Traditional and local systems of decision making, rooted in ecological connections, are being explored as potential models for today. In this conversation, the writer and curator John Thackara talks with two activist-researchers of bioregioning in South Asia, Shrishtee Bajpai and Ashish Kothari. He will ask them: what are the best ways spread and weave these real alternatives, this pluriverse of practices?
Shrishtee Bajpai @shrishtee writes about radical alternatives to dominant systems with a specific focus on indigenous, traditional, and customary ways of living and decision-making, and their underlying worldviews. As a core team member of Global Tapestry of Alternatives, and the environmental action group Kalpavriksh, she helps coordinate the Vikalp Sangam process (Alternatives Confluence) . With a special focus on the rights of nature movement in South Asia, she helped found Rights of Rivers South Asia Alliance. https://kalpavriksh.org/ourteam/shrishtee-bajpai/
Ashish Kothari @chikikothari is an environmentalist who works on the development-environment interface, biodiversity policy, and alternatives. He coordinated the Government of India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, and helps coordinate the Vikalp Sangam (Alternatives Confluence) which fosters relationships among organisations working on development alternatives across India. He is a founder of the environmental action group Kalpavriksh, active with several people’s movements, and was joint editor of the best-selling Pluriverse: A Post-Development Dictionary. He is on the core team of the Global Tapestry of Alternatives. Kothari and Bajpal are founding members of the South Asia Bioregionalism Working Group.

John Thackara @johnthackara - an author, curator and professor - explores designing for life. He curated the celebrated Doors of Perception conference for 20 years, first in Amsterdam, later across India, and was commissioner of the UK social innovation biennial Dott 07, and the French design biennial City Eco Lab. In 2019, he curated the Urban-Rural expo in Shanghai.
