Through song, film, presentation and discussion this session will explore Sengwer and Ogiek community decision making in the context of colonisation and resistance.
Can communities make good decisions together in a context where their livelihoods, and their connection to the land and each other, is under constant threat?
For the Sengwer this is a context where they are suffering evictions in the name of ‘conservation’. Can peoples’ deep connection to the land, and to the ancestors, help enable relationships of care, even in this context?
Do processes of writing down their bylaws and governance structures (partly in order to ‘prove’ to the powerful that they can care for their lands) hollow out and undermine, or strengthen and revitalise, community decision making and vitality?

Milka Chepkorir has been a champion of her Sengwer indigenous forest peoples in the Cherangany Hills in Kenya, and has been a strong voice supporting the Sengwer community in Embobut forest in the face of forceful evictions.
Milka wrote a powerful report on Sengwer Women’s Experience of Evictions and their involvement in the land rights struggle. Milka is particularly involved in awareness raising and empowerment of the youth and women in the community, and also coordinates the Community Land Act Now network that links forest peoples and pastoralist communities in Kenya and supports them to register their community lands.
