Fold-Fest! Magic with Folded Paper with Erin Sweeney (Online)

Take a break from winter clean up and garden prep to learn these basic staples of folded paper structures. You will leave with a collection of book models and resources to further your book creation. You can use the class to develop a portfolio of book structures. This series of 4 workshops offers an introduction to or a refresher of these popular folded paper book formats..

April 17: Accordion Madness!
We will explore the fabulous accordion structure and all the fun things we can do with this simple structure. There are so many different ways to use the accordion—using one sheet of paper, making it into a spine, adding multiple folds to each other. Get ready to experiment!

April 24: Fishbone and Flag
Two of my favorite Hedi Kyle structures, we will make these two books and play with content as well. Again, they are very simple structures that can be pushed and played with via material and content. The Fishbone is made using a variation on the accordions we will create in the first week, as is the Flag

May 1: Chinese Sewing Box Book
Another favorite of mine, Hedi taught this structure at Haystack in 2008, and I have made many since then. Based on the Masu box (another favorite of mine), it is a series of folded and flattened boxes that are then attached to create a book that can hide all sorts of goodies inside.

May 8: Drum Leaf
This book is a series of folios attached to each other using glue or tape—a structure that invites collaboration and can also be used to display artwork across a spread without being interrupted by a binding. I am hoping to collaborate across the class with this structure if people are up to it!

Instructor and bio: Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She also has a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. Sweeney exhibits nationally, most recently at the Lyceum Gallery at the Derryfield School in Manchester, New Hampshire, Unrequited Leisure in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Thorne-Sagendorph Gallery at Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire. In July, Sweeney was awarded a Ruth and James Ewing Award for Excellence in the Arts.
