Shuso Hossen is a ceremony marking the end of a shuso's term of service. A shuso is someone who serves as "chief student" for a year, assisting the teacher in making sure the Sangha is able to practice fruitfully and peacefully. To read more about the role of shuso, see this article: The Role of Shuso, or Chief Junior.
Hossen involves a fair amount of ceremonial, then the shuso presents a verse and takes questions from all present in the style of Mondo, formal question and answer. At the end, if the teacher pronounces, "You have done well," the shuso's term is over and congratulations are given.
Yuka Joan Maurer will have served as shuso at Bright Way Zen for the past year once this ceremony happens. Please attend to participate!
