An Oversharing Guide to Making Connections & Creating Opportunities with Karen Hanmer (Online)

For years, we've been enchanted by the tag line at the bottom of each Karen Hanmer email: Since 1997, answering the question "What will I do with my liberal arts degree?" The answer turns out to be a lot. In this lecture / Q&A workshop, Hanmer will give an overview of her career and varied practice through the lens of running a business. Topics covered will include networking; planning editioned work; pricing, exhibiting, and promoting that work; professional development; and the value of community.

This is not a hands-on workshop; rather, expect a 60-minute lecture followed by 30 minutes of Q&A (though we'll gladly run longer if the conversation is stimulating and beneficial to participants). This is an excellent experience for practicing book artists as well as artists just entering the field and anyone who's ever wished their arts education had included at least a simple course in business.

Instructor and bio:  Karen Hanmer's artist-made books are physical manifestations of personal essays intertwining history, culture, politics, science, and technology. She utilizes both traditional and contemporary book structures, and the work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer's work is included in collections ranging from The British Library and the Library of Congress to Stanford University and Graceland, and of course the Jaffe Collection. She offers workshops and private instruction focusing on a solid foundation in traditional binding skills.
