Please join us for a panel discussion on the implementation of ranked-choice voting in New York City. Our panel of experts will discuss the necessary steps to a fast and efficient implementation process, drawing on learnings from other cities and states and critical research in the field. We’ll be joined by experts Moon Duchin, Chris Hughes, Susan Lerner, and Pedro Hernandez.
Chris Hughes is the Policy Director and Counsel for the Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center. He makes sure administrators, activists, and policy makers are speaking the same language when it comes to ranked choice voting, from legislative drafting through election day. He has worked on RCV legislation in more than a dozen states and has presented on RCV implementation to the Washington State Association of County Audtiors, the Maryland General Assembly, and others. Susan Lerner is the Executive Director of Common Cause New York. Susan joined Common Cause in December, 2007. She is responsible for setting priorities, strategy, lobbying, serving as a spokesperson, fund-raising and leading the team for the New York organization. Before joining Common Cause, Susan served from 2003-07 as executive director of the California Clean Money Campaign. As a member of the New York and California bars, she was a litigator for almost 20 years. Susan has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Chicago and a law degree from the New York University School of Law.
Moon Duchin is a mathematician at Tufts University whose lab focuses on data science for civil rights. Her lab has emerged as a leading group in the statistical modeling of ranked choice voting, and particularly its impact on representation for communities of color. Duchin has been awarded a Radcliffe Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship connected to her work on the geometry of redistricting, and was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2017.
Pedro Hernandez (pronouns- he/him/his) is the Senior Policy Coordinator for FairVote. He has extensive experience on matters concerning ranked choice voting and voting rights. Working from San Francisco, he focuses his policy work advancing reforms that increase representation for all. In 2019, he helped draft and implement the first use of ranked choice voting as a remedy under the Federal Voting Rights Act.
