DESCRIPTION:
This three part webinar series will focus heavily but not exclusively on autism, so those seeking ideas for students with other labels/needs may also be interested in this series.
Presented by: Dr. Paula Kluth. Paula is a consultant, teacher, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities, and to create more responsive and engaging schooling experiences for all learners. Paula is a former special educator who has served as a classroom teacher and inclusion facilitator. Her professional interests include differentiating instruction, active learning, and inclusive schooling.
Session 1: Understanding Behavior & Understanding Students
This session is designed to explore fresh ways to think about "behavior problems" in inclusive schools. Paula will examine where problems come from, who "owns" them, and how language and approaches can both create behavior struggles and minimize them. She will also focus on the question, “Is your support supportive?” and provide suggestions for evaluating the way we approach the work of “managing” behavior. Three tools will be highlighted in this session: a strengths and strategies form, a planning “in reverse” process, and a CALM protocol.
Session 2: Disability-Related Struggles
Some behavior challenges are related directly to hidden issues that are disability-related. In this session, Paula will discuss the difficulties students may have with communication, perception, movements, and actions. Specifically, she will discuss the role sensory problems and movement differences play in a student’s ability to learn, engage with others, and function in the learning environment. Supports for students with sensory and movement needs (e.g., visuals, music) will also be shared and several examples will be provided. A handful of helpful websites will also be highlighted.
Session 3: Practical Strategies for the Classroom & Beyond
In this session, Paula will outline strategies that are sure to provide solutions for potentially-challenges. Ten supports and strategies that can be used across environments and grade levels will be the focus of this two-hour presentation. Featured strategies include positive choices, video modeling, strengths-based curriculum mapping, exercise, social narratives, and safe space. Video clips, classroom examples, and illustrations will be used to share these supports.
CAPACITY: Capacity is limited to the first 100 webinar participants. Please arrive early to secure a "seat" for this webinar. The session will also be recorded and available on the ITC website after the broadcast.
