A session exploring Frames and Stories through the lenses of Healthy Human Culture.
Explore the power of language to evoke healthy- or fear-based parts of the audience, and learn to consciously frame and re-frame in ways which evoke a healthy balance of care and strength.
Two basic frames that are used in communication relate to the two sides of the Healthy Human Culture map. George Lakoff has given these the names:
A key point from his work is that when we argue against someone within the frame of Strict Father we are still reinforcing the frame, and strengthening the hold of the fear based part of the audience. To evoke a trust-based response we need to reframe, creating our own phrases, language and metaphors which describe and evoke the world as we see it.
There are very well funded think-tanks supplying Strict Father framing of global, personal and political issues into the media, possibly deliberately escalating fear and division. How can we recognise these messages, and ensure we reframe to strengthen connection, trust and caring while still maintaining strength and boundaries?
