Long/Link with Circle Stitch Binding with Anne Covell (Online)

There will be a break of 2 hours after 2 hours of instruction 

This traditionally non-adhesive structure combines elements of both long and link stitch bindings to create an amazing variety of stitching patterns. Found predominantly throughout Europe beginning in the 16th century, this historical structure was often bound blank and used for account books and ledgers. In this workshop, we will use these historical methods as a framework for learning to sew a long stitch binding with a decorative link stitched circle at its center. Emphasis will be placed on constructing stiff handmade paper wrappers, developing templates, punching, and sewing. Finishing details including button closures and ties will also be covered.

Students in this class will be provided with a descriptive handout and materials list in advance of the class to allow students to bind along with the instructor during the demonstration.

This is a online class. Information about participating by zoom will be sent to all participants in advance. We encourage you to enroll early so you can gather the materials and supplies and work along during the class.

Instructor and bio: Anne Covell received her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she studied on an Iowa Arts Fellowship. She has taught courses in bookbinding, papermaking, and natural dyeing for the University of Iowa Center for the Book, as well as the University of Georgia study abroad program in Cortona, Italy. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad and can be seen in a growing number of special collections libraries and museums worldwide including the Yale University Arts Library, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the National Library of Chile. She currently resides in San Diego, CA.
