DESCRIPTION:
These three workshops will include the following core components: independence and interdependence and how they are influenced by familial cultural factors, the evolution of social norms over time, the ways in which social relationships change throughout people’s lives, strategies for facilitating and maintaining natural peer relationships, the importance of social skills and other ‘soft skills’ in post-school success, supporting students to have a presence on social media, and the development of communication systems that support making and keeping friends.
Presenter: Maurice Belote is the Project Coordinator for California Deafblind Services. He has been in the field of deafblindness for 39 years. Maurice provides technical assistance and training to teachers and families throughout California and can tell you where to find the best tacos most anywhere along California’s north/south highways. His passions include ensuring that students leave school with functional communication systems and that they are prepared to have the same kind of quality lives that any of us would wish for ourselves.
Session 1 (April 20): Social Skills: Why Should We Care?
The first webinar will lay the foundation for the series by focusing on social connections. It will address the need to address social skills, friendships, and issues with self-esteem from an early age with all children and youth, including those with and without disabilities.
Session 2 (April 27): Quirky is Cool: Strategies for Making and Keeping Friends
This webinar will discuss how social situations can cause stress and anxiety for everyone and can be a bigger issue for children who have extensive support needs. Many of these children and youth are already operating at increased levels of stress. Strategies will be presented on how to provide support for students, the use of social media platforms, and how to not just make friends but also keep friends.
Session 3 (May 4): Post School Lives: Meeting the Needs of Teens/Young Adults
The final session will look at the strategy of Circle of Friends and how to use it to drive our work with students. It will look at the common barriers to social success and what can be done to address these barriers. Finally, the session will identify motivators at various stages of children’s lives and explore the role self-esteem plays throughout their social life.
