DESCRIPTION:
Series Title: Assessment Driven Communication Intervention for Learners with Significant Disabilities
Presenter: Philip D. Schweigert, M.Ed., began teaching children with sensory and multiple disabilities in 1977. He was a project coordinator for 22 years on a number of research efforts to investigate assessment and intervention strategies in communication and concept skill development of learners with severe disabilities. He has co-authored curriculum materials and articles for refereed journals. He recently retired from the University of New Mexico and continues to provide consultations and technical assistance.
Session 1 (April 16): Recognizing the Communication Abilities of Learners with Significant Disabilities
o The first session will focus on assessing levels of communication for learners at the non-symbolic or early symbolic level of communication. The Communication Matrix will be used to review the assessment process and how to target levels for instruction and programming.
Session 2 (April 23): Expanding the Communicative Competence of the Pre-Symbolic Learner
o The second session will discuss the difference between intentional and intentionally communicative behaviors in learners at the pre-symbolic levels of communication. Students will be presented with a variety of examples of learners at various pre-symbolic stages and intervention strategies to further their communicative abilities.
Session 3 (April 30): Promoting Progress for the Emergent Symbolic Learner
o The final session will discuss the transition from pre-symbolic to emerging symbolic communication and describe interventions designed to promote the learner’s continued progress at this stage of expressive communication development.
