Rock Pets & Rock Art Every rock has a personality — find it, paint it, keep it forever

Supplies Provided For Class

+Smooth rocks — river rocks or craft store bag, palm-sized, flat-bottomed preferred. 

+Craft paint

+Paintbrushes (assorted)

+Googly eyes

+Felt scraps + craft glue (optional) — ears, tails, fins cut and glued for 3D pet details

+Water cups + paper towels — one cup per student for brush rinsing. 

Rock Pet Ideas — Inspiration for Students

• 🐱 Cat or fox — oval rock, pointed felt ears, whisker lines
• 🐢 Turtle — round rock, shell pattern on top, tiny head
• 🦔 Hedgehog — spiky back with dots, cute snout
• 🐞 Ladybug — red base, black dots, beginner-friendly
• 🌊 Landscape art — sunset, ocean, mountains, no pet needed
• 🌸 Floral & pattern — mandalas, flowers, abstract dots

Schedule

*Show examples.

*Students choose their rock and decide on their pet or design. 

*Apply color in layers — light colors first, darker details on top. Bodies, backgrounds, and big shapes before faces and fine lines.

*Sharpie outlines, face features, dot patterns, white highlight dots. Add googly eyes or felt pieces with glue. Let dry fully.

*Instructor brushes Mod Podge over finished rocks. While drying, students fill out a "pet passport" card — name, species, personality, favorite food.

*Introduce your rock pet to the class. Pack up with take-home bag. Rinse brushes with water before paint dries!
