Bioregional Doughnuts: Regenerating Bioregional Carrying Capacities with New United Nations Indicators

At the beginning of November, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is releasing a set of "Sustainable Development Performance Indicators" that assess against both thresholds (ie, the Doughnut's Ecological Ceilings and Social Foundations) and transformation. The culmination of a 4-year development process, this line of work has already been hailed as a "major inflection point" and "sustainability history in the making." In addition to being applicable to enterprises, they can also be applied to geographic regions (a municipality participated in the pilot testing), and hence are usable by bioregions.
Bill Baue, Senior Director of r3.0 (which supported UNRISD in developing the indicators) and a Systems Convener of the Connecticut River Valley Bioregional Collaborative, will present briefly on the indicators, and then facilitate a discussion on applying the Doughnut to bioregions to assess bioregional carrying capacity thresholds.
Isabel Carlisle (Bioregional Learning Centre) will be in a support role to tell the story of the Devon Doughnut. Randy Sa'd of REFOCUS and the Flourishing Enterprise Institute will also share about his work focused on enabling municipalities, as a critical leverage point within a bioregional movement, to lead change. He will speak to two municipalities with which he is currently applying A Doughnut-aligned version of the MultiCapital Scorecard (MCS), as well as an international applied research partnership established with ICLEI World Secretariat to scale this work.
