Coterie - an intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose, for example, a coterie of artists

This in-depth workshop will include 12 full day workshop sessions, 2 per month over 6 months. Below is a brief description of what the sessions will include. For a class-by-class schedule, go to the full description:

1. Idea generation exercises, writing exercises and practice in editing.

2. Content development, design and production techniques and tips including the importance of pacing, page layout and material choices.

3. Techniques such as pop-up design, gelli-plate printing, linocut printing and painting.

4. The importance of binding choice and instruction on the following bindings: pamphlet stitch, single needle Coptic stitch, accordion books, French link, stab bindings, piano hinge, star tunnel book and coin envelope book.

5. The importance of presentation, packaging and storage, students will make a portfolio wrap, a candy box, a soft-sided slipcase (2 variations) and a clamshell box.

6. Technical guidance including how to edit photos, how to keyword, store and access photos, how to clean, print and manage printing with different substrates.

7. Professional guidance, including how to make a website, how to write an artist’s statement, writing an artists CV, bio, and how to photograph artwork. Using Social media. Entering shows.

8. Community Building: The importance of groups for artists, conversations, suggestions and critiques each month.

In addition to monthly sessions, online community and support will be provided. Students will be given monthly assignments to practice bindings, skills and techniques learned at each 2-day session.

Instructor and bio: Ginger Burrell is an artist and teacher whose primary medium is artist books. Her work includes photography, monotype and composite imagery and explores a range of topics from the personal, to the political, to the universal. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and her books are held in private and public collections including SFMOMA, the New York Public Library, Yale University, Ringling School of Art and Design and Stanford University.  She often collaborates with her husband, Greg, who is adept at U-turns because there is something that really needs to be photographed. She has her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from San Jose State University’s school of Art and Design.
