Short Biography of Birendra N. Mallick
Birendra N. Mallick was awarded the Calcutta University Gold Medal for securing first position in M.Sc. Physiology. Post-Ph.D. (AIIMS) he joined the School of Life Sciences, JNU (1986) as Asstt. Prof. and since 2001 he is a full Professor. Besides teaching, starting from scratch he has established a Neurobiology research lab and initiated REM Sleep research in the country focussing on understanding “Neural Regulation and Functions of REM Sleep” (http://www.jnu.ac.in/Faculty/bnmallick/; http://neurowiki2013.wikidot.com/individual:rem-sleep). He has published ~130 papers and chapters and 4 books; his is the latest most comprehensive model of neural regulation of REM sleep. He has delivered >200 invited and plenary lectures within the country and abroad and chaired many sessions. He has reviewed papers from >50 International journals; he is Assoc Editor of several International journals. Twenty scholars have completed Ph.D. under him, several of them have received coveted National awards in India/abroad and are established scientists across the globe. Biren Mallick has been elected fellow of all the 3 nationally recognized Science Academies and has received several top national awards.
