Coptic and caterpillar stitch books are exposed-spine books that are both beautiful and versatile. They open flat which make them perfect for sketchbooks, cookbooks, guest books, journals or any book that you would like to lay open and have easy access to write or draw in.
In the workshop, we will make three blank books with art and text weight papers. The first will be a single-needle Coptic stitch book made using the covers from a vintage book and 70 lb Mohawk Superfine paper. While making this book, students will learn about grain direction and how to tear paper from parent sheets. For the second and third books, students will make original covers using Davey board and their choices from a selection of beautiful paper from around the world. A technique to apply paper inlays to decorate the covers will be taught. The second book will be a double-needle Coptic stitch book with Canson XL Mix Media pages and we will finish the class by learning how to sew the caterpillar stitch and make a third blank book, with 70 lb Mohawk Superfine paper for the text block.
