Workshop open to all women in Bristol Girls Surf Club (BGSC) and extended local skate/surf skate groups.
Note: This is a session being run by Val the Coach and not BGSC. Val is donating her time to BGSC and extended skate groups to help women understand how to train for surfing, skating and life.
Why Strength Training?
As women, strength training has historically been a taboo. The tension between societal norms of femininity and strength being classed as a masculine domain has not helped.
Women were historically excluded from many sports on this basis, amongst others.
Often people think of building big muscles when we think about strength training, and many women don't want to look too muscular.
But strength training doesn't mean being bulky and muscly.
Body building is the form of training that can lead to big muscles, but it is a very specific way of training and unless this is what you want to do, you don't have to train in a way to build bulk.
We can train strength without being big and muscly! 😊
✅Strength helps us to resist injury in sport and active pursuits
✅It helps us grow older with mobility and independence
✅Strength helps us perform better in sports and active pursuits
As many of us women will go through perimenopause and menopause, strength training is key to ensure we see less age-related decline in muscle mass and bone density.

What we will cover:
Movement Optimisation
Using awareness and mobility drills we will learn more about:
✅Our breathing pattern and its role to spine stabilization, muscle function and power output.
✅The functional range of motion of our joints and how it can help us get a better pop-up and better positioning on the board.
✅The dynamic alignment of our joints and how we can use it to avoid muscle compensations and injuries.
Strength & Conditioning
✅Lifting technique for in the gym or training at home
✅The importance of strength training for sport and life
✅Aerobic conditioning for surfing and life and how to develop your aerobic capacity for sport and health
✅An introduction to Olympic weightlifting - cuz it’s fun, it helps sport & why not! 😆
In a few words, this workshop will help you pop-up faster, surf confidently, avoid injuries and last longer!
Who can come?
Open to all women, no matter your ability.
You can take part or just come and listen.
If you take part, it won’t be a gnarly session, it’s a learning space more than a training session.

Transport Options:
Lift-share from Bristol
Train and share a taxi with others
Train suggestion from a Stroud local in BGSC - please ask away in the group chat if you want to know more
🚉I'd suggest getting the train to Cam & Dursley which is direct from Temple Meads or Parkway (glos/chelt/Birmingham/some times Scotland train) then pre-book a taxi...there isn't uber in the sticks! (You might even be able to convince some people like me driving to come back & pick you up cos it's a nice 10 - 15 country drive)
👨✈️Happy to suggest local reliable taxi's too cos they don't queue up at Cam & Dursley
