“Collage is literally a border art, an art of what happens when two things confront each other or spill onto each other, what conversations arise from the conjunction of difference, and how differences can feed a new whole.”—Rebecca Solnit
Enjoy a fresh approach to the world of fabric. Stitching, the simple act of mending, absorbs one’s attention so one can focus on the immediate (and ignore the obvious). Using fabric and thread as our medium, we will explore different techniques to make our marks.
We will explore mark making and asemic writing framed in the realm of textiles, from stitchery to collage-making with fabric and thread. We will use various drawing tools and media to explore marks and lines in various ways on different surfaces. We will incorporate basic stitching and embroidery and explore sashiko and boro* mending techniques. Simple block printing and potato printing on fabric will also be utilized. We will construct a book using the fabric prints and collages we make in class.
One exemplary source of inspiration for this class is Louise Bourgeois’ work, such as her fabric books, Ode à la Bièvre and Ode à l’Oubli. Various others will be discussed in class.
*Sashiko is “country style” stitching or needlework for recycling and warmth. Boro is the reworking and repairing of textiles through piecing, patching, and stitching to extend their use.
