Theodore Richards: The Climate, The Cage, & Coronavirus: Interconnected Crises & the Cosmology of Disconnection
Wed May 20, 2020 8:00 PM - 9:15 PM
(Time zone:
Cairo)
This talk will explore the various crises of Modernity as arising from the dualisms of Modern Cosmology—the notion that we can separate the interior, psychological realm from the material, political, or social spheres. These dualisms give rise to the walls we’ve constructed to separate ourselves from others or even to put others in cages—and ultimately, the walls that have trapped us all in cages.
This talk will consist of four parts:
- In Part I, “From Crises to Crisis”, I will discuss the myriad crises our planet faces at the moment and argue that they are best understood as a single interconnected crisis.
- In Part II, “The Inner Climate”, I will address the crisis as it is manifested in our interior lives, particularly in widespread cosmic loneliness.
- In Part III, “The Cosmology of Disconnection,” I will describe the cosmology that has gotten us here, especially as it is the product of the individualism of capitalism.
- In Part IV, “The One-Planet Schoolhouse,” I will offer alternatives to the cosmology of disconnection, focusing on the ways in which we learn and educate through metaphor, symbol and story.
