In this class, students will learn to sew a Japanese stab binding with tortoise shell pattern according to traditional aesthetics and techniques. Elements of this structure include a tacketed inner binding sewn from twisted paper thread, elegant bookcloth endbands, and a decorative outer binding with soft and supple paper covers. This is an elegant binding that is ideal for a variety of applications.
This class can be taken as a stand alone or as an expansion on the techniques learned in the Japanese Stab Binding Sampler offered earlier in the day. Students in this class will be provided with a descriptive handout and materials list in advance of the class to allow students to bind along with the instructor during the demonstration.
