Fasteners give a book stability, protection from environmental elements, and a feeling of privacy. Inspired by historical books, we will explore designs and functions of book closures, combine them with personal creative ideas and contemporary craftsmanship.
This class includes a brief theoretical introduction to the history of book closures. We will look at historical and contemporary samples and become familiar with a variety of closures through hands-on practice and step-by-step instructions.
Students will make a leather slip cover on which to apply one of the fasteners learned about in class. Students are welcome to use their own hardware and bindings in the workshop if desired. (No previous bookbinding experience required).
