Jointly organized by the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and with the sponsorship of the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, the side event will provide an overview of observed and emerging trends relating to the destruction of cultural heritage and illicit trade of cultural property, and their linkages with terrorism, and current responses to phenomenon. Experts from civil society, academia, and relevant inter-governmental organizations, as well as criminal justice practitioners, will discuss practices and challenges relating to effectively preventing, detecting, investigating and prosecuting the destruction and illicit trade of cultural property and its linkages with terrorism, including its financing, at a national, regional and international level. The discussion will also help delineate ongoing legal, policy and research gaps on the issue, and underscore the value of comprehensive and multilateral responses to the phenomenon.
