Join Joyce Blair for an inspiring and hands-on workshop exploring the beauty, drama, and magic of sunset clouds. Whether you work in oils, acrylics, or gouache, you’ll discover how to create skies that glow with light, atmosphere, and emotion. Pastel and watercolor artists are also welcome to attend, although the techniques demonstrated will focus on opaque painting methods.
Through engaging demonstrations and guided practice, Joyce will share her approach to capturing the fleeting beauty of a sunset—from luminous light and glowing edges to rich color relationships and subtle shifts in value. You’ll learn how to mix atmospheric colors, create convincing depth, and shape clouds with expressive, soft-edged forms that feel alive.
Together, we’ll explore the warm, glowing colors of sunset and the way evening light transforms clouds into dramatic shapes of gold, peach, rose, lavender, and blue. You’ll gain practical techniques you can take back to your studio and use to create skies that become more than a backdrop—they become a captivating focal point that draws the viewer into the painting.

Materials:
· 2 - 8x10 or 9x12 canvasses (whatever size you’re comfortable with)
· Full range of paint colors (red, blue, yellow, white, burnt sienna, warm and cool gray if you have them. If not, we can mix from the primary colors)
· Brushes – Bring whatever brushes you’re comfortable using. In addition to your regular brushes you’ll need one softer brush to work on edges. I like using a watercolor brush.
· A palette knife is handy for mixing colors
