The myriad of unique structures invented by Hedi Kyle have had an enormous impact on
the field of book arts. Artists far and wide have been inspired and influenced by her
masterful paper engineering and particular genius for transforming the architecture and
action of the book. This workshop will be an introduction to some of Hedi’s gems, such as
the spider book, fishbone fold, pivoting panels, and blizzard book.
We will use a variety of visually interesting materials and papers, but our focus will be on
form and structure rather than content, with the goal being for each student to produce a
collection of sample books that can be used as reference and inspiration for further
projects. Hedi’s examples teach us that the physical properties of a book convey meaning.
This sampler will provide a foundation for developing a sensitivity to the ways in which a
book’s weight, material, and movement inform the reading experience and connect intimately to content
