The world of paper arts is exploding with creativity and new ways to expand on tradition. You’ll begin the week by creating beautiful papers, using paste paper and marbling techniques with acrylic paints, carrageenan and traditional marbling tools, along with some modern twists. Then you will use your papers to create handmade books, boxes and journals, using book board, mat board, archival glues, Tyvek, embellishments and hand-screened papers from around the world.
During class, you will make a basic covered pedestal box, a hinged box, a blizzard bound book and a notebook with Japanese stab binding, an introduction to the Chinese Thread Book as well as some traditional binding techniques and folded books. You’ll also learn many other techniques and enjoy a few surprises. There will be plenty of time to practice and create your own designs!
Bring a large cutting mat, large and small scissors, a utility knife, an apron, rubber gloves (optional), a roll of paper towels, sharp pencils, an old bath towel, a bone folder and a box of unscented baby wipes. And feel free to bring any of your own treasured papers, beads or other embellishments that you might have. If you have a small paper trimmer, iron, or blow drier, you might want to bring it with you as well.
