In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn the basics of using the materials and tools common to all book making, including time-saving tips and ways to work smarter, not harder. Even if you’re a grizzled veteran of book arts, I guarantee you’ll learn at least one new thing! Paper - weight (g/m2??), grain direction, folding, slitting, cutting, creasing, scoring, terminology. Cutting Tools – An overview of available cutting tools and the proper way to use them, from knives to a tabletop paper cutter. You’ll make and keep a sharpening tool that will keep your cutting tools razor sharp. Measuring without a rule. Benchhook basics – cutting, scoring, creasing, repetition, drawing. Sewing – thread, needles, wax. We’ll make a simple sewn book. Archival – what’s it mean? Surprise (you gotta come to see what it is). All materials furnished.

To bring: One pad of paper (8.5” x 11”, 9” x 12” or 11” x 17”); your favorite cutting tool, bone folder, pen or pencil.

Instructor: Al Rodríguez, a San Diego native, is a retired schoolteacher who taught graphic arts and photography in the San Diego City Schools for 38 years. His life-long interest in paper and printing lead naturally into book arts, an art form that he taught to his students during the final five years of his teaching career. He has served in many capacities with San Diego Book Arts since his retirement and his work has appeared in many of that organization’s exhibitions. His work is in several private collections including the collections of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla, and the University of Washington.
