In this class we will learn to write, illustrate and bind an artist's book.
First we create a simple, personal writing piece. Students may want to arrive early to collect inspiration from Sitka's beautiful surrounds. We will then explore the visual themes of our writing in a fun technique that provides an inspired foundation for the book's pages. Then we develop the work into lettered illustrations and bind them into a simple soft-cover artist book with a spine. This book form was adapted from Timothy Ely's Drum Leaf Binding to be accessible to beginners and craft-challenged creatives.

Instructor: Alexandra Schaefers is an artist-poet hybrid from Corvallis where she paints plein air in local woodlands and illustrates poems. She strives to make work that blurs the artificial boundary between humans and nature, believing if we reclaim our rightful place in nature we will become better stewards of the planet and our own bodies and minds.
As an art teacher she encourages people to suspend judgment and create from a genuine place. She believes art is a powerful way to celebrate one's inner nature where we find the same beauty as our favorite wild places.
