We all love the beach, but it isn't easy to write about. This workshop will focus especially on writing about that windblown, wave-swept edge, and by extrapolation any natural environment where the conditions are sometimes adverse, but the pay-off is immense. The class will include a walk (or two) on a local beach to gather observations, anecdotes, flotsam, mussels, and more, with which we will return to Sitka to turn into personal or lyrical essay. Short, sandy readings from Henry David Thoreau, Henry Beston, Rachel Carson, and Barry Lopez, and others will be distributed ahead of time for discussion.
